This is one of the most important benefits the Union has
negotiated for its members. It provides excellent income
protection for members when they are ill. No one should have
to worry about financial issues at a time when they should be
focusing on getting better. The sick leave bank is like an
insurance policy. It’s there when you need it! But even more
important, it also gives you a chance to help your co-workers
who may be ill. Think Union Yes. By donating your days to a
bank that will disperse the days to those deserving, you are
helping fellow co-workers in their time of need.
We have over
3,500 employees who are members of the bank. There is a
committee of 3 that meets every 3 weeks to review request
forms from members who are out ill and applying to the bank.
The committee members discuss the medical information provided
to determine whether a person should receive a grant and then
they decide the number of days to be awarded. Because no one
on the committee has a medical background, all questions
generated by the committee will be referred for a 2nd
opinion by a doctor of their choosing. The committee
will do everything possible to be fair when approving
grants.
