Election Activities 2006 at
Local 2250

In the weeks leading up to
Election Day, November 7, 2006, the Local 2250 office was a whirlwind of
activities. Local 2250 Executive Board
members, stewards, and committee members volunteered to make calls to our members
to get them out to vote. Every registered
voter in Local 2250 should have received a call or a message concerning the
importance of electing a Governor, Attorney General, Comptroller, State Senator
and Representatives, as well as a new School Board. Some of our members also received knocks on
their doors to remind them to get out to the polls to vote. Many of our members thanked us for calling
them and expressed that they were glad to hear from their
In addition, AFSCME
International staffers formed teams to distribute election material to every
school, bus lot, garage, maintenance yard, and office buildings. Our members also took stacks of election
materials to their own worksites. AFSCME

Our champion phone-banker
was Valerie Carroll, recently retired Food Services satellite leader at
Princeton ES who came in for 2 hours every week for 6 weeks to call her fellow
union members. Valerie was interviewed
and photographed for the “Public Employee,” AFSCME’s
national magazine, for her extraordinary effort to get our members to the polls.
On Election Day, Local
2250’s phone-bankers and door-knockers were visited by the President of the
AFL-CIO, John Sweeney, the President of the MD/DC Central Labor Council, Josh
Williams, the President and Director of the Maryland AFL-CIO, Fred Mason and
Donna Edwards, and the International AFSCME Vice-President, Glenn
Middleton. Mr. Sweeney thanked everyone
for their efforts in mobilizing themselves and their memberships into action.
